SAF Fast Facts

What is SAF and why is it important to America’s future?

Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is an aviation fuel used to power aircraft that can reduce emissions from air transportation. SAF is made from renewable biomass and captured gases and has similar properties to conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint.

What is SAF?

  • SAF is Made from Renewable Resources – SAF is an aviation fuel produced from a variety of renewable feedstocks that serves as an alternative to petroleum jet fuel.
  • SAF Mixes with Traditional Jet Fuel – SAF mimics the chemical and physical properties of traditional jet fuel, meaning it can directly displace petroleum – currently to a maximum of 50% – to create a cleaner fuel compound.
  • SAF Seamlessly Integrates with Existing Aviation Infrastructure – SAF is compatible with the existing fuel supply systems already in place at airports and do not require modifications to aircraft or engines.

SAF by the Numbers

  • SAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% and up to 100%.
  • The U.S. has enough sustainably collected biomass capacity to produce 50–60 billion gallons of biofuels each year. Source >

SAF Benefits

  • AGRICULTURE

Strengthens America’s agriculture sector by providing farmers a new market to sell their crops and feedstocks to biofuel producers.

  • ENERGY SECURITY

Provides an opportunity to enhance domestic fuel production, enhancing energy security and independence while positioning the U.S. to be a global leader and net exporter of SAF.

  • ENVIRONMENT

Reduces aviation’s carbon footprint by using fuels with significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuel.

  • ECONOMY

Creates good-paying jobs and new economic opportunities for farmers and communities in rural America, as well as in manufacturing, and renewable energy sectors.

Through policy reforms, the U.S. can lead the world in SAF production, become a net exporter of SAF and ensure American energy security in this rapidly evolving source of energy.
